Synopsis

The book Višejezičnost i ovladavanje jezikom (Multilingualism and Language Acquisition) highlights the complexity of multilingualism and provides an overview of the current state of research in the field from psycholinguistic and educational perspectives. In its narrowest sense, the book focuses on multilingualism as a phenomenon involving more than two languages in an individual’s linguistic repertoire or in society. However, since multilingualism is examined from the perspective of language acquisition - particularly in the context of fostering, developing, and maintaining individual multilingualism - the book also draws on insights from research on bilingualism, first language acquisition, and second language acquisition, in those aspects that are essential for understanding multilingualism.

Awareness of the complexity of specific issues in the field of multilingualism is crucial both for deepening theoretical understanding and for articulating the practical implications of multilingualism. In this respect, the book opens with a questionnaire that encourages readers to reflect on their own knowledge, experiences, and beliefs, offering an accessible yet intellectually stimulating entry point into the topic. The questions in the questionnaire do not always have clear-cut or precise answers; rather, they primarily draw attention to the complexity of the phenomena associated with multilingualism. Readers can explore or verify possible answers and explanations in individual chapters of the book.

The book is conceived as an introduction to the field of multilingualism, but its extensive reference list also enables further in-depth study. It is intended for students, teachers, researchers, and all those interested in how the knowledge and use of multiple languages shape the individual, learning processes, and communication.

Author Biography

Stela Letica Krevelj, University of Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of English

An Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia. She is Chair of the Second Language Acquisition and TEFL Section in the Department of English. Her academic and research work focuses on second and third language acquisition, multilingual education, and multilingual language development, with particular emphasis on cross-linguistic influence, metalinguistic awareness, and early language learning. She also conducts research on methodological and ethical issues in language acquisition and multilingualism.

She has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. Her research activities include participation in several national and international research projects, among them the European Comission's project ELLiE (Early Language Learning in Europe). She is co-editor of Early Foreign Language Learning and Teaching: Evidence Versus Wishful Thinking (Multilingual Matters, 2025) and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Croatian applied linguistics journal Strani jezici. She has also served as a member of the Executive Board of the International Association of Multilingualism (IAM) and is actively involved in international research networks in applied linguistics and multilingualism.
